Can I do it on my own?

Can I do it myself?

“Am I going to get a job? Yes you will, but what you should be asking yourself is how long will take me…”

London has a highly successful economy and is still Australia and New Zealand’s youth working holiday location of choice, even in the currently challenging economic market. Those most affected by the current high unemployment levels are 18-24 year olds.

  • What does means for you? It can now take longer for the average jobseeker to secure a start date than it did for your friends and family, who have done it the past.
  • There are 600,000 job seekers without qualifications looking for entry level, part time and temp jobs daily in London alone.
  • More applicants’ means longer screening and selection time.
  • The end result is that you are out of pocket quickly if you don’t have an immediate start on arrival.

So although you can do this yourself you need to consider the financial risk and factor in the average time frame it will take to secure your first pay check.

Planning is everything...

Establish your dream, what would you like to achieve in your two short two years on a working holiday VISA?

  • Plan the times you intend to travel and work out how much time will be allocated to earning and how much time you intend to spend travelling. This will help you determine what type of working holiday will work for you and what  type of job you best suit your needs.
  • Be realistic about your overseas adventure travel plans ( where you plan to do India, Mexico, China AND Mongolia!) backpacking, is expensive and if you are between the ages of 18-24 expect to work in elementary roles or more lower paid roles than you would in your  normal life. The UK is still in a recession so be realistic. Saving your cash on arrival is critical, now more than ever. If you want your dream to become a reality you need to watch your spending and PLAN!

Run this by some of your friends in London you, see if they agree

I HAVE ARRIVED – LOOK OUT!- Finallyyou have arrived have made it to London! You will be supa excited, you have made it and you are cashed up ready to see the world! You feel invisible, free pumped for what to see next.

First you figure out he London underground, next you try figuring the strange notes and coins, it’s time for sightseeing, Big Ben, Tower of London, walk about pub, hearing at the strange accents on the tube, double decker busses, black cabs … can it get any more fun…

Your first week will exhausting you and you will spend, spend and spend some more…

Watch out for this week, be mindful, take care and do not spend to much

DOSSING. Many Australians and new Zealanders opt to stay on mates couch for when you first arrive in London. The two main reasonsappear to be to save cash or a familiar face.

Couch surfing can be fun and cheap, however these some consequences.

  • couples struggle as dossers
  • getting enough kip is a challenge, and you need this if you intend on getting jobs anytime soon. When you interview you must be top of your game. Competition is thought
  • plenty of parties with you your housemates means more spending
  • more spending means you are less likely to have your deposit ready when its time.
  • you need a fixed address to get bank account and NI numbers etc., so if you intend to be doing for a a few weeks, you must arrange your arrival pack before you go
  • the lifespan a dosser is short, we highly recommend you manage your expectations  here that you
“You might want to look at how TWHC can ensure a place for you to rent when you are ready, it already booked and your spot is secured, so if you want to stay with you mates just too overcome the isolation”

ALL PLAY AND NO WORK - In the early days after arrival most travellers will admit to spending way too much of their hard saved cash on pubs, clubs and parties.

You are almost guaranteed to go to the Walkabout, drinking snakebites at the Red back (Reddy), and the church on Sunday where your counterpart have not slept for days and everyone is walking around plastic bags full of beer tied to their belts ,wet T-shots comps etc…  Again, spend, spend, and spend.

SHOPPING The best way to get over massive hangover is retail therapyThe London high street can be a tempting place to lighten your wallet! (New clothes for new weather conditions). If you have not packet for weather you will be out there stocking up! Major damage to your wallet happen right here!

MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN

A recent survey showed a shocking statistic that new arrivals can spend up to 50% of their savings in the first two weeks. Some achieve this amazing goal in their first week.

Advice to 18-24 year olds with limited work experience, consider when you are spending your hard earned cash, the likely hood that you will earning large enough wages when you first arrive to recoup that money is low. You will affect future travel plans if you get you spending wrong.

WEEK TWO - RECOVERY WEEK

COUNTING YOUR LOSSES.

So it Monday morning, all your housemates have gone to work, you are left with a dreadfully messy house to clean by way of contributing as you are dosser remember.  Suddenly a sharp steak goes through your gut when you look at your wallet, you spent it all. So you run the ATM – check balance, cardiac arrest.

You will find your day consumed by guilt and counting your losses from week one.

PANIC could very easily start to set in, you start to questioning yourself and your manic behaviours from week one, some start to feel unprepared and ill informed. “How was it so expensive, it all looked so cheap, £2 here and £5 there…after a week of thinking I’m only spending a fiver you need up spending hundreds have spent hundreds.

TIME TO LOOK FOR A JOB-

Now you will need to prepare for job your job hunting job, you will find yourself madly flicking thought the pages of T&T mag stuck under the couch. In a panic state you will buy every single paper and magazine known to man to find out where the job is advertised. You check the windows at the local “ofe” for job to cover all bases.

Your mates promise of job guarantee on arrival dwindle as they discover they do possess the supernatural mind power to brain washing their bosses to hire you as well, like they promised before you left home.

Hi my name is Sam, and I need a job and a place to say

Back on your mate’s couch you will start calling your newly acquired PAY mobile costing us much as £50 a week when you job house hunting. Think about every job advert you call for. The agent will want to know more about you to see if they can help you, spend 5-10min with every agent is not unusual. This is one of those nasty hidden expenses you just never think about.

WEEK THEREE - REALISATION WEEK

THINGS COULD START GETTING UNCOMFORTABLE - by week three your mate’s couches will start to feel a little uncomfortable.

  • Your housemate’s charity to share their space will start run to thin, you in their living area. Overcrowding starts can change the   mood in the house and you could  start to feel uncomfortable
  • Lack of phone calls for employment opportunity will only fuel you already shattered spirit.
If money might be getting low you will start feeling the pressure, if the housemates are edgy you will need to rent room soon

MISSING PEACES IN THE PUZZLE- After your efforts to secure employment and  a room you soon will uncover that unless you arrange important documentations in week one or before you go, you will find yourself being rejected for job and rooms to rent.

  • UK bank account

Temporary and part time workers in London

“More of the part-time opportunities available in London are filled people who are looking for full-time work”

London employers use temporary workers to a slightly greater extent than employers nationally. Temp work is well suited to for working holiday makers, rates are usually higher and you can plan for overseas travel with less restrictions that those permanent counterpart at work.

  • Scan job boards daily and set up email alerts, remember to turn them off as your inbox will become painfully full.
  • Register with no less than 30 temp agencies in the city you decide to make more permanent

Londoners who want to work part-time face particularly tough competition in the city’s labour market.

  • More of the part-time opportunities available in London are filled by students or people who are looking for full-time. In 2010, 149,200 Londoners were working part-time because they could not get a fulltime job.
  • Where part-time jobs are available, they are mainly filled by women.

The nature of backpacker employment in London

“Young people working in London are three times as likely to be in sales and customer service occupations”
  • The National Employer Skills Survey (NESS) found that young people who are backpacking in London tend to be employed in industries and occupations that offer part-time, and often relatively low-skilled and low-paid jobs in sales, customer service, hospitality and manual labour.
  • Employers in London are  much less likely to recruit a school or college leaver.
  • A recent reduction in “entry level”, “quick start” employment opportunities for backpackers has been as a result of the introductions of the EU labour force. Millions of new jobseekers are competing for temporary and part time jobs.
  • Backpackers also tend to be high turnover staff and often results in highertraining cost for employers, making you guys  them less attractive for hire than the new EU workforce.
  • Employers are more focused on hiring hospitality focused individual for live in Pubs than the traditional Australian or New Zealand backpacker, so pub job vacancies are limited.

These findings show just how much harder it is for young backpacker or school leaver to find employment in London compared to previous years.

The skills demanded by London employers

“work experience is the most important factor used to select candidates for interview; the value attributed to qualifications was relatively low”
  • work experience is the most important factor used to select candidates for interview;
  • how much of that work experience has been in the  UK is also an important factor when determining which employer decides to hire;
  • the value attributed to qualifications is relatively low
  • The attributes most sought for in prospective staff are interpersonal and communication skills, motivation and flexibility, including: willingness to work and learn; appearance; behaviour; and confidence.

This peace is partially important to recent graduate, unless you apply for a graduates vacancy, employers are less likely to place importance on your degree as much as they are focused at your maturity and opportunity fit into the origination.
